How to Prep Your Yard for Summer (Without Going Overboard)

Texas summers don’t play around—and if your yard isn’t ready, things can go downhill fast. Dead grass, weeds taking over, mulch baked dry, and flower beds that look like nobody lives there.

How to Prep Your Yard for Summer (Without Going Overboard)
Simple steps to keep your lawn and landscaping in check when the Texas heat hits.

Here’s how to get ahead of it, without turning your weekends into landscaping marathons.

1. Start With a Cleanup

Before you plant anything or lay down mulch, get the basics out of the way:

  • Rake up leaves, sticks, and junk

  • Pull the big weeds

  • Trim overgrown bushes and trees

  • Edge your beds and walkways

Why it matters: It sets the stage for everything else. Clean yards don’t just look better—they’re easier to manage all summer long.

2. Refresh Mulch (or Add It If You Haven’t)

Mulch does more than just make your beds look clean. It holds moisture, keeps weeds down, and protects your soil from the sun. If yours looks gray, patchy, or thin—it’s time for a fresh layer.

Pro tip: Don’t pile mulch up around the base of your plants or trees. It traps moisture and can cause rot. Keep it 2–3 inches deep and spread evenly.

3. Check Your Irrigation (or Water Smarter)

If you’ve got a sprinkler system, make sure it’s not shooting water onto your fence, sidewalk, or the neighbor’s driveway. If you don’t have one, water early in the morning—deep and less often is better than daily sprinkles.

Bonus tip: Add compost or organic matter to your soil to help it retain water. Less watering, better results.

4. Don’t Go Plant Crazy Just Yet

We see it every year—people drop hundreds at the garden center, plant everything in one day, and then half of it dies in the heat.

Keep it simple: Start with hardy, heat-tolerant plants that are native to Texas. They're low-maintenance and built for our climate. Think: lantana, salvia, ornamental grasses, and yaupon holly.

5. Focus on the Front First

If you're short on time or budget, knock out the front yard first. Clean lines, trimmed plants, and a fresh bed up front go a long way toward curb appeal—even if the backyard's still a work in progress.
